For Jul 4th, it was nice that we were able to focus the traditional family celebration on the following weekend. As we often do, we flew into Chicago the day before driving to Iowa City. As has too often been the case this summer, our flight was delayed. resulted in a later landing in Chicago. Although we were too late for the big organized events, the late arrival did give us an excellent view of all of the neighbourhood firework shows throughout the city. As a plane was still on the runway when we arrived to land, we even got to do a quick go around for another view of the show.

With everyone traveling on the 5th, we had an evening gathering at Rick and Rosie’s house, were fed well, and were happy to see Bob, Laura, and all of Tom’s siblings and spouses. Tom decided to leave the camera in the hotel and focus on visiting. At the end of the day, we had an excellent view of the official Iowa City fireworks over the old capitol from our hotel room.

Saturday was the day for the traditional July 4th celebration barbecue and annual croquet tournament. We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day that wasn’t too hot. Somehow, I actually played a good croquet game, making it into the finals in contention until near the end. As always, Rick and Rosie put on a great celebration with lots of time for visiting. This time, Tom brought out the camera to capture a few candid family photos.
After a great celebration, we made our way to our downtown Iowa City hotel.

We had a final chance to visit over breakfast at Rick and Rosie’s, and then drove back to Chicago for our evening flight home.
